Juan Nakpil? HOA blog

I really dont know if this is a part of our blog for History Of Architecture 2 but here it goes.
I'd rather have a low grade than no grade at all :D

the question was "Is Juan Nakpil deserving to be called our National artist?" with my research I learned the styles Juan Nakpil imposed in his structures and mostly are International/modern architecture and maybe that is why my professor gave us this question to ponder. If the architectural style used is in question maybe its not for us to judge and misudnerstand for each architect have their own styles like Leandro Locsin who's works are (Tanghalang Balagtas,PICC and CCP) who have the same style as Juan Nakpil modern, simple and boxed typed. The only difference is no one tried to ask why he is was proclaimed as National Artist for Architecture (1990) by Former President Corazon Aquino.  So I decided to ask other people particularly my dad who's also an Architect I asked him if Juan Nakpils works are good and straight forward and in an instant he answered me yes and I asked him about his(Juan Nakpil) works and he mentioned me a number of structure he worked on like the Quiapo church and told me that his(Juan Nakpil) works are nice. I cant research more about Juan Nakpil in the net all the informations about him are limited on what will be the basis so we can say he's not deserving of his title.

Then let me just conclude this that we can say that Juan Nakpil is unlike Francisco Mañosa who embraced the culture of the filipino and placed it in his designs like the Coconut Palace but maybe and probably his works and him working for the Philippine Goverment/country is what caused him to be given that said award. He in some ways made/left a mark to the Filipino Architecture/people thats why?I dont know everything is based on my opinion and my dads. It still depends on the people and the wrong thing he/she sees at a person:)
but for me rather that making issues we should be proud and be thankful for his works.

PS:please look at my old post. I Know its late but I'd rather have a low grade than no grade at all. please and thank you

International buildings/structures along roxas boulevard and UN avenue

Characteristics of Modern architecture
  • the notion that "Form follows function", a dictum originally expressed by Frank Lloyd Wright's early mentor Louis Sullivan, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose
  • simplicity and clarity of forms and elimination of "unnecessary detail"
  • visual expression of structure (as opposed to the hiding of structural elements)
  • the related concept of "Truth to materials", meaning that the true nature or natural appearance of a material ought to be seen rather than concealed or altered to represent something else
  • use of industrially-produced materials; adoption of the machine aesthetic
  • particularly in International Style modernism, a visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines

MIFF (Manila film center)

International buildings as I understood it is simple and doesnt have that much of a detail and here at the MIFF  the simplicity can easily be seen and probably function was the main priority.
with its large windows and columanded /multiple columns/ foundations with a wide steps stairs ready for multiple or plenty audience and a ramp for cars.

PICC(Philippine International Convention Center)

Location: Pasay City
Architect: Leandro Locsin

Folk Arts Theater
Architect/designer: Leandro V. Locsin in 1974.

CCP(Cultural Center of the Philippines)
Architect: Leandro V. Locsin

BSP(Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas)

WHO(World Health Organization)

most international/modern architecture seems to have the same design the consecutive window openings a boz like/ typical sqaure and rectangle shaped structure with flat roofs or probably because I took a picture of structures of the the same architect Leandro Locsin. :)
still architecture doesnt mean beauty but also its function maybe its beauty is inside not on the outside cause we shouldnt judge a book by its cover right?:D

Neo classical

"Neoclassical architecture is characterized by grandeur of scale, simplicity of geometric forms, Greek—especially Doric (see order)—or Roman detail, dramatic use of columns, and a preference for blank walls. The new taste for antique simplicity represented a general reaction to the excesses of the Rococo style."- http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1383512/Neoclassical-architecture

Characteristics
all of them (well except for the Manila city hall) have the neoclassical  characteristics of having a series of columns, capitals, pediments massive and simple.
these buildings/structures doesnt have aesthetic design instead it is simple and grandeur in its own way. On what Ive read It stated there that Neoclassical buildings doesnt have towers of domes well as you can see on the set of pictures they dont except for the clock tower  on the City hall.

most of these buildings were built after the war and was maintained up to this date. I just hope they continue maintaining it because they are simply a work of art. Something people can look back in to on day.
